False
This is a myth that seems to come and go. The truth is,
grains and grain products such as breads, pasta, rice and
cereals are naturally low in fat and high in complex carbohydrate.
Only three nutrients provide calories: carbohydrates, protein
and fat. One gram of carbohydrate or protein provides 4
calories, while 1 gram of fat provides 9 calories. Therefore
foods high in carbohydrate tend to be lower in calories
than high fat foods.
There is also some evidence to suggest that extra calories
from fat are more easily stored as body fat than extra calories
from carbohydrate.
Whole grain products such as whole wheat bread and pasta,
brown rice and higher fibre cereals help to control blood
sugar levels and carry us longer between meal, therefore
helping to satisfy the appetite.
Lastly, by smoothering toast, pasta and rice with fatty
spreads and sauces like butter, margarine, and cream sauces,
leaves these foods lacking in texture. Use these condiments
as accents to the meal instead of the main flavour.
