Recommended Daily Intake:
6-12mg/day

Lycopene is a bright red carotenoid pigment and phytochemical found in tomatoes and other red fruits. Because preliminary research has shown an inverse correlation between consumption of tomatoes and cancer risk, lycopene has been considered a potential agent for prevention of some types of cancers, particularly prostate cancer.

Food Sources:

Tomatoes
Tomato-based products (ketchup, tomato sauce, tomato paste, and tomato juice)
Watermelon
Pink Grapefruit
Guava

Benefits of Adequate Intake:

Studies suggest a diet rich in lycopene may help reduce the risk of prostate cancer
Lycopene is associated with the maintenance of cardiovascular health
May reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease
May help reduce high cholesterol levels
Ongoing preliminary research suggests that lycopene is associated with reduced risk of macular degenerative disease, serum lipid oxidation, and cancers of the lung, bladder, cervix, prostate, and skin.
